Helsinki Design Week 2009 started on the 6th of September, with two events that usually attract the interest of a wide range of people; the annual fashion show of young Finnish designers, and the design market.

The venue was once again the Cable Factory. The design market is a bazaar where independent designers, and companies sell their products on generous discounts. The products on offer vary from Tonfinsk porcelain, LUMI bags, CNTRL t-shirts, HOPE recycled fashion, to jewellery and paper carpets. ...

Generally, I'm in agreement with the ideals Doctress Neutopia presents in this article. Where I disagree with her is in her assumption of a society apparently far more rational, reasonable, and coherent than that which actually exists today. As a result, she proposes a solution to the world's imminent social and environmental crisis that is very much like the iconic arcology itself; beautiful, gigantic, elaborate, but not well thought-out/worked-out in detail. ...

....the article (link) is really interesting, but as architect, engineer, and planner I'm a bit skeptical about Soleri's model.

Arcology is a comprehensive device which need to be created by a top-down authority....need to have 100% consensus...in one word is not that democratic. Risking to be a bit polemic, I would say: better to have sprawl than a dictatorship...because that's the kind of project.

As architect I'm really fascinated by these pure and organic forms, but the reality is much complex and I don't see many chances for Soleri's project to be successful. Yet we can't address a problem so complex (namely, change our way of live) in such simplistic terms. ...

"Let's complete Anders's project" is a P2P contest aimed to complete Anders Simonsen's research on mass culture, consume, and decadence in post-socialist countries in Europe (see: http://www.presstletter.com/articolo.asp?articolo=2044).

New topics will be created in the discussion board of the UF-Facebook. In this space you can copy/paste texts and links created by you or quotations from an available (for publishing) source. In alternative, you can post your work to "cityleft (at) altervista (dot) org". The aim is to complete Anders’s research.

This will be one of the first experiments in P2P media-art research. I hope you will be proud to take part on it and, therefore, invite other friend to do so. Once the series of pictures will be entirely published, UF-Community will evaluate democratically each proposal which, together with the pictures, will be published in the first issue of UF-Mag, available online as well as in paperback. ...

What's about the northern periphery of Europe?

How post-communist countries handled the transition from a collective economy to a liberal one?

What imply transnational dynamics between consolidated and fast-developing countries over cities?

What socio-spatial patterns can we recognize in this particular side of Europe and how Europeanisation is influencing young-small democracies in the Baltic Sea?

As planners, what future scenarios can we propose beside the increasing fragmentation of cities? ...

To this day, the European Union does not have a football team; and the attempt to define a flag and anthem ended unsuccessfully due to the resistance of those fearing that a European super-state would threaten their national identities. If there is nevertheless something like a shared European identity, something what distinguishes our continent from other parts of the world, then it is the European social model. Even though the volume of redistributed resources differs from country to country, all member states of the European Union share the assumption that society has some responsibility towards those who are more vulnerable. The resulting “welfare state” is in fact more than a number of state programmes. Its unique success in ensuring stability and cohesion is based on the synergy of policies and practices by private employers, trade unions, citizen groups, and, importantly, cities and smaller municipalities. In regard to the latter, urban sociologists have coined the term “European city” to describe this model which exists throughout the continent....

Being late the first day of my appointment, as usual, I found the door of the workspace at Bauhaus Foundation closed. Without any chance to get in, I knocked at the door of the IBA, on the second floor of the white building at the end of Gropiusallee 38. That’s how I met Anders Simonsen, almost two years ago in Germany, when I moved to Dessau to start an intensive research period.

In the late summer East Germany looks completely different from the cold place I was expecting. It is more human-friendly and the wind as well as the colours of the leaves is quite warm. Those are qualities that, so far, you appreciate if you get used to live in north Europe. ...
